What is Bastille Day?

Bastille Day, also known as French National Day, is a holiday celebrating the beginning of the French Revolution and the Storming of the Bastille by angry Parisian crowds during the reign of King Louis XVI,
The beginning of the French Revolution and the Storming of the Bastille forced the creation of the modern French Republic.
The July 14 “Fête de la Fédération” celebrated the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille. It became a French national holiday in 1880 and has been observed ever since.

When is Bastille Day?

Officially, Bastille Day is on Friday, July 14, 2017. The holiday is always held on July 14 to celebrate French National Day (July 14, 1789).

How do we celebrate Bastille Day or French National Day?

Bastille Day is commemorated with a military parade in Paris attended by President of the Republic, currently Emmanuel Macron, and other political leaders.
Some 4,000 soldiers, police, firefighters and various military academies take part in the spectacle on Paris's famous Champs-Élysées.
Flags of blue, white and red fly everywhere, but especially on the Champs-Élysées in Paris where the large Bastille Day Military Parade is filled with cadet, infantry, motorized and mounted troops. They march from l’Arc de Triomphe to Place de la Concorde. Allied troops also march in the parade. The sky is busy with airforce aerobatic displays.
Elsewhere in France, villages, towns and cities host their own fireworks displays and dances (July 13).
In the evening fireworks light up the capital from the Eiffel Tower.
